What is Religious Deconstruction?
Deconstruction is dismantling one’s mental construct of religion to evaluate all components individually. This may or may not result in leaving the religion.
I believe getting to the point of deconstructing is caused by an event or experience that shifts an individual’s perspective or by reaching a limit of misalignment that causes them to reevaluate everything.
This process can be mentally and emotionally draining because religion can be such a huge component of one’s identity and lifestyle. Having to question that can feel destabilizing about one’s place in the world and possibly alienate them from their community. There’s also the community’s judgment about people who don’t share pre-existing beliefs that can be hard not to internalize as beliefs change.
Brianna Post Religion
I created this channel to share my ideas about religion, spirituality, and deconstruction. There’s seems to be a gap in guidance on how to deconstruct and a lack of non-white or male voices. I don’t believe I speak for black people or black women, but I do believe race affects the way we interact with religion and people need to see a different side of the conversation.
My main goal for the channel is to expand thought. I believe the true goal of deconstruction is to recover the ability to choose one’s thoughts and beliefs. By introducing new ideas, I hope to help people see where there is choice.
I believe we can remove illusions and faulty thinking and consciously choose to practice religion or leave religion but still maintain fellowship with “God” or the creator energy. With my content, I seek to create pathways to these two options.
Coaching
My goals for coaching around religious deconstruction are to
1. expand thought
2. build intuition
3. process experiences and
4. cultivate the life and spirituality you desire.
- Expand thought: as I mentioned above, the problems we really find with our religion is realizing our ability to think has been compromise without our knowing. It’s important to take back control of thinking and establishing beliefs.
- Build Intuition: Many of us were conditioned out of our intuition in favor of dying to ourselves or only focusing on God’s will. We were instructed to hold beliefs we may not have understood or believed, so now without those beliefs, one may find themselves feeling lost and unsure about how to navigate life. Building self-trust and the ability to listen to one’s intuition is imperative for moving forward with confidence.
- Process experiences: With every new thought or piece of information, one recalls an experience. Many times, these experiences were scary or shameful at the time, and now it’s hard to accept how that shame or fear wasn’t appropriate. This realization itself can cause anger and sadness for what was lost, which you may need help dealing with. There is also the need to voice the experiences you realize were affected by your thoughts being limited, and you need to explore the extent of the illusion you experienced. All of these tasks are important parts of deconstruction, but may be hard to find someone to hold space for.
- Cultivate what you desire: Many people find they don’t know what they want because they don’t know who they are without religion. Maybe the formative years were overshadowed by religious devotion, or maybe you were led to believe your heart’s desires didn’t matter or, worse, were evil. Let’s work on identifying your true self and the life that person wants to live.
And while many people decide to leave religion altogether, maybe you want something more. Maybe you want to find a way to stay in your religious tradition, or maybe you want to learn to practice spirituality. It can be hard to navigate these options when you have been used to your church or religious leaders telling you how you should connect with God. We will work together to help you establish a practice that feels supportive and authentic to you.
